What to pack in your leave-right-now camping box | MNN - Mother Nature Network ... - Mother Nature Network

My wife and I like to head out every so often for a weekend of car camping . We just pull up to a campsite along a lake or in the redwoods and relax for the weekend, hiking during the day and sitting around a campfire at night. It's a quick getaway to recharge. What we don't want to do for these trips is spend a lot of time planning or packing. We just want to throw a couple things in the car and go — yet we don't want to forget all the little things that make camping comfortable, such as sunscreen or soap. To make spontaneous weekend camping trips as easy as possible, we have a "go box" for our camping supplies. Everything we could need is in one place, ready to go, so it's easy to dash out the door for a weekend away. Thanks to this box, we are unlikely to forget any of the little necessities or niceties, yet we spend almost no time actually packing. In one large container — specifically, a clear plastic 30-gallon bin with a lid — I've loaded up everything we might need from first aid to cookware all the way down to a few games to play. Everything fits with room to spare. To make it easy to find various items, I've packed boxes within the box — a box for the cookware, another for the games, another for the rarely-needed-but-just-in-case items, and so on. You can use this list to create your own grab-n-go camping box. Your list of contents will be specific to you. We are a family of two, plus a dog , who like to have a few comforts while camping. Maybe you have a larger family with kids , or perhaps you like to head out into the wilderness with just the bare basics. This supply list is simply a start. you can customize it to suit your specific needs. For cooking and meal times:. Wire rack for a campfire grill Wire brush and scraper for grill Canister stove and fuel Lighters and weatherproof matches Firestarter sticks Paper napkins 2-person cook set including 2 plates, a pan, a pot and 2 mugs Extra paper plates Extra mugs... 2 dish towels Dish soap. Save on Your Summer Camping Trip - DailyFinance

Camping is a great way to take a summer vacation without spending a ton of money, and if you plan your trip carefully, you can stretch your dollar even further. Here are a few simple ways to save on your summer camping trip. First, before you go out and buy new gear, take a look around your house. You'll find that you already have a bunch of items that are perfect for camping. For instance, the yoga mat that's rolled up in your garage will work perfectly as a sleeping pad, and rather than spending up to $200 on a new sleeping bag, grab some old comforters from your closet. Also, you likely have older pots and pans lying around the house. Instead of shelling out for a brand new set of camping cookware, put them to use. Next, while you're packing up the cooler, always use block ice instead of buying bags of ice cubes. Just fill up some plastic jugs with water, freeze them, and you'll be good to go. Not only will they last much longer than a bag of ice, but when they thaw, you'll have cool drinking water. Another great way to save on your camping trip is by using solar lanterns. Charge them in the sun during the day so they'll run all night. You can pick one up for around $30, and you won't have to buy a box of batteries just to keep the lights on. Finally, always bring a small tarp to protect your woodpile from a surprise rain shower. All it takes is a passing storm to ruin your entire wood supply, forcing you to run out and buy more. Keep it covered to save yourself money, time and a lot of frustration. If you're going camping this summer, remember these tips to get the most out of your trip. You'll see that by using a few small strategies, you'll stretch your camping budget in a big way. Source: www.dailyfinance.com

Storm Lake Pilot Tribune: Features: Home away from home (07/20/15) - Pilot Tribune

The hush of Cottonwoods, families sitting in camp chairs under awnings, laundry swaying on a makeshift line, sun dappled RVs and campers of growing sizes and forms, children in a frenzied groups riding bikes down the lane. These are all familiar sites at local campgrounds Lakeside Marina and Sunrise Park Campgrounds. It's the allure of temporary ownership, the desire for simple togetherness and the outdoors. Signs like "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" appear often figuring prominently into the relaxed state of mind. Stay a weekend or stay all summer. "It's a summer house on the lake without the taxes," Mary Jo Davis of Lakeside Marina said. Lakeside Marina has been full this summer. Many campers come April 15th and stay the whole season, but some will come for a special occasion like a holiday or a wedding in town. Davis has had several that have come consistently to Lakeside Marina for years and says that it is certainly the lake that draws them in. Many are avid fishermen that have commented on how dredging has improved the water quality and clarity. Others enjoy floating out in the sunshine. Davis has seen a good mixture of families and retired couples coming to stay this summer. There are even those that work in town and come back each night their campers. A sense of community has emerged at Lakeside, and Davis notes that often people come together for a community meal potluck style. Interestingly enough, the following advances in camping may have made this easier. Over the years, as RVs and campers have increased in size and the outdoor fold out section becomes like kitchen with grills and sinks, individuals no longer have to go back and forth for cooking needs. Also, many campers now have cast iron cookware for meals like cobblers and stews that can be cooked outside right over the fire. New business YouniQue Adventures jointly founded by husband and wife team Matt and Chandra Younie lets area residents join in on the camper experience without the upfront cost of buying a camper first. "What we're trying to do is promote families," Chandra Younie said. "When we take our adult children and grandchildren camping we have the best quality time. We want it to be about the family and making those memories. When you go and sit around the bonfire you have the best conversations," she said. Younie has many memories of camping throughout her life starting when she herself was young. "My parents used to own a Coachmen camper dealership, so. Source: www.stormlakepilottribune.com
