Renters have a role to play when it comes to water conservation - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Much of the recent media coverage of California’s drought has focused on green lawns and agriculture. But with the legal mandate requiring Californians to cut water usage across the board, everyone has a role to play, including renters. We know that landscape irrigation accounts for as much as half of the average household’s water use. For apartment tenants, this is generally good news, because most apartment communities have only a small amount of outdoor landscaping compared to the average single-family home. On the other hand, it means you will have to find other ways to conserve water, which is why the San Diego County Apartment Association drafted this column. Some renters in San Diego live in single-family homes. If you rent a single-family home, talk to your landlord about what you can do together to conserve water. Many homeowners qualify for rebates if they replace grass turf with drought-tolerant plants. Rebates are also available for low-flow toilets, showerheads, faucets and other water fixtures. Whether you live in a house or an apartment, you can always change your own behavior indoors. You may have heard some of these tips before, but it has never been more important to try to adopt them into your daily lifestyle. As you go about your day, pay attention to how you use water in every room of your home. How are you washing your dishes. If you wash your dishes in the sink, don’t let the faucet run while you’re scrubbing. Instead of using water to rinse food scraps from your cookware, scrape them into a trash can. If you have a dishwasher, experiment to see if you really need the pre-rinse or extra rinse cycles. Most modern dishwashers can get the job done with a minimal amount of water. What about showers. Do you know how long your showers take. Try setting a stopwatch – you may be surprised. Also, if you let the shower run while waiting for the water to heat up, use a bucket to capture the cold water. Save it and use it to water your plants. The bathroom sink is another place to look for water savings. Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth. When you wash your hands, don’t let the water run while you soap up. If you shave at the sink, try using a small bowl of water to rinse your razor between swipes. You can save two gallons a minute by adopting these habits. If you have a clothes washer in your unit, consider your laundry habits. You can save a significant amount of water by only. Locanda Ravello brings a touch of Naples to Danville; Gordon Biersch redo in ... - Marin Independent Journal

Silvestri said they plan to keep the menu concise, with a lineup of pastas, pizzas, antipasti and secondi similar to the Peninsula location -- including the recipes for lasagna, meatballs, gnocchi and tripe that came from Rosano's Mamma Carmela. Panini are added to the lunch menu, and the obligatory eggs Benedict finds its way onto the weekend brunch menu for those who require hollandaise instead of Bolognese before noon. Details: Open Tuesday-Sunday at 172 E. Prospect Ave. ravello-danville. Brewpub redux: The first brewpub opened by Bay Area craft-brew pioneers Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch has closed, 27 years after making its debut in Palo Alto. But there's good news for fans of the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant: Owner CraftWorks is licensing the Emerson Street site to local restaurateurs, who will take over and renovate the brewpub -- with Gordon's advice and expertise. The trio of owners has plenty of experience with Gordon Biersch and the Peninsula restaurant scene. It's Steve and Lisa Sinchek, who own the Local Union 271 eatery and the Old Pro sports bar (he was GB's original bar manager), and Gordon's son, Oliver Gordon, who, of course, grew up in the business. "It will be all farm-to-table. They'll be doing it the way Dean and I originally did," Gordon said. And not to worry: The garlic fries will return when the new restaurant does in early 2016. "They're an institution. They're not going to go away," he added. The new venture's name. (Try saying that fast five times. Culinary school: The Sur la Table cookware store at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek has expanded to accommodate a cooking class kitchen and hands-on instruction. More than 50 October classes are already accepting registrations, and it's a yummy lineup: "Tasty Thai Favorites," "Risotto at Home" and, just in time for Halloween, several sessions of "Family Fun: Spooky-Sweet Treats. " Need to develop basic kitchen skills or brush up on yours. Look for classes such as "Learn to Cut Like a Pro. " Signups: www. surlatable. Pad sigh: The owners of Chao Praya Thai Cuisine in San Mateo have retired after 30 years. The El Camino Real stalwart, voted best Thai restaurant for seven years by the San Mateo County Times, was one of the first Thai eateries in the area. Share your memories of Chao Praya on our Eat Drink Play blog, blogs. mercurynews. com/eat-drink-play and tell us: Where will you go now for your Thai. Source: www.marinij.com

Great Lessons for Start-up Entrepreneurs from Ree Drummond, a.k.a. The Pioneer ... - Pulse

Ree Drummond, a. k. a. The Pioneer Woman, has launched a line of 'wares — glass, bake, cook and EAT — that are flying off Walmart's shelves and starring in thousands of social media conversations. How is this possible, just nine years after this blogger first typed "ThePioneerWoman. Her roll-out of these home goods and kitchen tools include valuable lessons for start-up entrepreneurs seeking to build a strong community for their products. First, feast your eyes. A little background: I’ve had the privilege of working since 2010 with Ree, a member of the BlogHer Publishing Network, now part of SheKnows Media. That means we’re in business together, that my company has provided some of her ads for five years, and she’s a favorite keynoter at BlogHer conferences. But it’s Ree who’s the creative visionary and gifted entrepreneur who launched:. ThePioneerWoman. com blog TastyKitchen. com cooking community “The Pioneer Woman” show on The Food Network, and A series of best-selling cookbooks and children’s books. In every case, the quality standards and production values Ree brings to her blogs, recipes, and storytelling -- in text, images and on-camera -- have been defined by two things: An exquisite sense of design, juxtaposed with a voice that is both... At the same time that she's warm and caring with her community, she makes endless, real fun of herself - her sweat, her Spanx, her vanity as a young bride-to-be. She bills her voice as Lucille Ball meets Vivien Leigh and Ethel Merman, and she's that fearless about skewering herself. I’ve watched her impersonation of Merman singing “There’s no business like show business” bring shocked audiences to howls of laughter. The kicker to the joke is Ree’s physical presence: You just don’t expect Merman’s huge, grating voice to come out of this gorgeous redhead. Brings down the house. Now Ree’s created and launched a line of housewares that is true to this combo of quality and fun. Working with Gibson Inc. , designed and developed in the USA, manufactured in China and currently distributed via Walmart both online and in brick-and-mortar stores, Ree brings the same customer service and sensibility to these products that I’ve seen her bring to...
