5 benefits of cooking with cast iron - Eco Child's Play

I’ve always loved cooking in cast iron. Durable and old-fashioned, I get nostalgic in the kitchen when I used cast iron. It wasn’t until I hemorrhaged after delivering my first baby that I learned there are health benefits, not just emotional ones, to using cast iron. It is also good for our environment because cast iron cookware lasts forever and doesn’t use soap. 5 Health Benefits of Cooking with Cast Iron 1. Prevent Iron Deficiency Are you tired all the time or have difficulty focusing. It could be from a lack of iron in your blood. Nine percent of all women are deficient in iron, largely due to monthly menstruation. “Seasoning” is vegetable oil baked onto the iron at a high temperature: not a chemical non-stick coating. Seasoning creates the natural, easy-release properties. The more you cook, the better it gets. Because you create, maintain, and even repair the “seasoning”, your cookware can last 100 years or more. Chemical non-stick coating cannot be repaired, limiting lifespan. Cast iron is less expensive and will last forever Cast iron cookware is made by literally the way it sounds. Iron is heated and then cast into the shape of cookware. Cast iron cookware will last for at least 100 years. Even if not treated right, the rust can be scoured off and the pan re-seasoned. In today’s throw-away culture, this is important. Even though you may not buy cookware as often as other kitchen gadgets, investment in cast iron is an investment for life. Get a little workout Many people complain cast iron is too heavy. This heaviness is what allows for even heating and excellent cooking results, unlike stainless steel which can heat unevenly. What I like about the heaviness of cast iron is it uses my muscles. Any place in our daily lives we can get a little work out keeps us healthy and in shape. Going to the gym to exercise costs money and takes effort. Using cast iron in the kitchen may not be the same as a CrossFit workout, but a little heavy lifting when cooking and cleaning up keeps the arms toned. (It can also be used as a weapon in self-defense:)). The average cast iron pan weighs seven to eight pounds. I think you could design a whole workout routine lifting cast iron cookware. Save on Dish Soap To clean cast iron cookware, you do not use soap. If you do, the pan will need to be reseasoned. For some dish. Source: ecochildsplay.com

4 Nontoxic, Eco-Friendly Cookware That's Safe for You and Your Family - EcoWatch

Chances are, you probably own at least one piece of Teflon or other type of toxic non-stick cookware . “Toxic fumes from the Teflon chemical released from pots and pans at high temperatures may kill pet birds and cause people to develop flu-like... Stainless steel pans do not heat evenly unless they have an aluminum, copper or other metal core that has even heating properties. Ceramic pans with a cast iron core have even heating. However, they don’t work as well as a plain cast iron pan. Cast iron pans should be safe. Solid ceramic pans don’t heat as evenly, so are best not used for frying where even heating is important. Le Creuset — reasonably priced. I’m sure you can rationalize the price (i. e. “lasts a lifetime” but you’ll get massive sticker shock. I think they don’t sell anything under $150 which gets an entire ensemble from other makers. World Market has more modestly priced cookware similar to Le Creuset, also Target. Source: ecowatch.com

What is macrobiotic and how to snack like one - Eco Child's Play

THE life of man, physically considered, is a peculiar chemico-animal operation . a phenomenon effected by a concurrence of the united powers of Nature with matter in a continual state of change. This, like every other physical operation, must have its defined laws, boundaries, and duration, so far as they depend on the sum of the given powers and matter, their application, and many other external as well as internal circumstances. but, like every other physical operation, it can be promoted or impeded, accelerated or retarded. By laying down just principles respecting its essence and wants, and by attending to observations made from experience, the circumstances under which this process may be hastened and shortened, or retarded and prolonged, can be discovered. Upon this may be founded dietetic rules and a medical mode of treatment for preserving life. and hence arises a particular science, the MACROBIOTIC, or the art of prolonging it, which forms the subject of the present work. About a 100 years later, Sagen Ishizuka, a Japanese doctor, developed 5 principles for macrobiotic living:. Food is the foundation of life, character, constitution, happiness and health or sickness. Sodium and potassium are the primary antagonistic and complementary elements in food. They most strongly determine its character, or “yin/yang” quality. Food must be balanced in its contents of potassium and sodium. For mankind, the main staple food is grain. Food should be unrefined, whole, and natural. Foods are best if they are grown locally and eaten in season. The macrobiotic diet was the first healthy plan for eating I learned about when I became vegetarian thirty years ago. Being a vegetarian is not required to be macrobiotic (fish is part of the diet, and infrequent red meat is allowed). Macrobiotic is literally translated from Greek to mean:. macro= great. biotics= pertaining to life. I recently have once again renewed my interest in eating macrobiotic. When I think of macrobiotic eating, I think of brown rice, seaweed, and steamed vegetables. I have returned to eating more in line with macrobiotics after discussing my digestion issues with my massage therapist. When I told her bloated and gassy my intestines get from raw food, she suggested I eat only cooked fruits and. Source: ecochildsplay.com
