Gadgets makes Thanksgiving a breeze - Sioux City Journal

SIOUX CITY | Convenience and portability should go hand-in-hand when it comes to cooking a Thanksgiving dinner, according to Kitchen Collection store manager Tonia Pickens. "Cooking a Thanksgiving dinner takes a lot of time and preparation," she said inside her Southern Hills Mall store. "Luckily, there are ways to make it easier. For most families, turkey will be the chief attraction on "Turkey Day. " Pickens said a Turbo Roaster will allow cooks to roast a bird in half the time through an infusion of flavor. "The turkey will come out moist and delicious," she said. While Kitchen Collection has a wide variety of covered and uncovered roasters in stock, its often difficult removing the bird from the oven and onto a platter. "We have a turkey lifter that will lift the heavy bird from the pan with ease," Pickens said. Carving sets -- including one featuring the electric knife that Pickens loves -- are also available. "I'm a newcomer when it comes to electric knives," she admitted, "but it really makes carving a breeze. In addition, Kitchen Collection has packages of turkey frills -- or as Pickens called them "turkey booties" -- in the store. "Some people love to put 'em on the drumsticks," she said. "It's a tradition in some homes. Cooking big birds and big pies can be messy. That's why Pickens suggests oven liners as a way to keep clean-up easy. "With an oven liner, you'll never have to clean the bottom of your oven again," she said, showing off a collection of Teflon and silicone liners. "Even burned or baked-on messes can be wiped away with soapy water and a sponge. Pickens also has several options for transporting food and leftovers for cooks on the go. "If you're transporting food to a family member's home, you don't want any spills," she said, showing off a selection of portable food store sets. "Some of these containers will have you scratching your head, thinking why didn't they come up with that idea years ago. That's true for many of the items in Pickens' store. "I'm always amazed at the ingenuity of some of these gadgets," she admitted. "They make cooking a breeze. Pickens ought to know. An experienced home chef, she has made Thanksgiving dinner for as many as 50 people in the past. "I used to plan for Thanksgiving a few weeks before the event," she remembered. "Then, a day or two before, I'd begin the cooking. Source: siouxcityjournal.com

Gift ideas for Fort Collins cooks, foodies - The Coloradoan

Shopping for the cook on your list is easy with all the local resources we have here in Fort Collins. With a week until Christmas, shopping locally means no worry about receiving a package in time for the big day, and it also guarantees no surprises or disappointments about quality, size or color. Cooks love gadgets and equipment that make life in the kitchen easier and quicker. A high-speed blender or a new food processor make chopping and mixing a breeze, and a juicer is perfect for those who love nutrient dense beverages. An immersion blender purees soups in a hurry, right in the soup pot. New tongs, peelers, silicone brushes or spatulas, or a really good knife and cutting board, are perfect gifts for the new cook. Cast iron cookware is always a favorite. I love my Lodge cast iron grill pan that keeps me inside instead of braving the winter elements, and their griddle is perfect for hotcakes or corn cakes. Cast iron heats evenly, holds the heat longer, is nonstick when properly seasoned and cared for, and doesn't give off gases like other nonstick cookware. Plus, it's relatively inexpensive. It lasts a lifetime or longer. Available at Ace Hardware or Jax. Jax also carries the stovetop smoker made by Cameron's out of Colorado Springs. Small and compact, it easily produces delicious smoked salmon or trout in 20 minutes. I've used mine to smoke pork tenderloin, chicken, even a whole duck, and it doesn't smoke up the kitchen. It comes with complete directions and four containers of different wood chips for the aficianado. How about a sampling of delicious cheeses from The Welsh Rabbit, along with a bottle of wine for the wine and cheese buff on your list. Or a selection of teas with a teapot from Happy Lucky's. Any cook would love a bottle of aged balsamic vinegar and/or a special olive oil from one of our local vendors, or a collection of fragrant spices from one of the spice shops. When giving tools or ingredients for the kitchen, include a favorite recipe to personalize your gift. The sales folks at all these shops are helpful and knowledgeable, able to advise you in making a special purchase that will be happily received. Every cook likes a new cookbook. Anything by Ina Garten is a good bet, as well as from Mario Batali. I love Italian or French cookbooks by Patricia Wells, who tells a little story about each recipe and includes a wine recommendation for the dish. Stephen Raichlen writes encyclopedic books about. 18 things you can clean in the dishwasher (aside from the dishes) - Mother Nature Network (blog)

In this parched era of lawn watering crackdowns , guilt-inducing showerheads and canceled Slip 'N Slide parties , many have taken to viewing water-consuming household appliances in a different light. If you have a dishwasher at home (author note: I envy you), perhaps you’ve even considered switching over to hand-washing dirty dishes in the sink as part of an overall effort to save precious H20 and decrease your household water footprint. This isn’t necessarily the best idea. Unless your dishwasher is ancient, hand-washing actually requires more water (and energy) to get the job done. Although there are exceptions that can be made, using a newer model dishwasher, particularly an Energy Star branded model, is the most efficient way to clean those forks, knives and salad plates. So unless you consider yourself a master in the technique of efficiently washing dishes by hand , please, don’t abandon that dishwasher for the sake of water conservation. And what about other in-need-of-cleaning household items that are normally vigorously washed by hand in the sink or taken out back and given a good scrubbing and rinse-off with the aid of the leaky garden hose. Can you save water by running them through the dishwasher as well. In some cases, yes. Many somewhat surprising items can be effectively cleaned — and sanitized — in the dishwasher, whether it’s just a quick rinse or for a full cycle. Some of these items you can totally add in with your juice glasses and plastic cutting boards while others you may want to clean individually or with similar items. General rule of thumb: the more you can pack into a single load without damaging/shrinking/ruining anything, the better. And it goes without saying, if cleaning a certain item in the dishwasher gives you pause, check with the care instructions, if available, first. Happy non-dish dishwashing. Rubber flip-flops, rain boots, galoshes and canvas sneakers all go for a deep-cleaning ride in the dishwasher. Just turn off the heat dry cycle and remove all liners or inserts beforehand. Barf-splattered My Little Ponies, dirt-smeared G. I. Joes and other toys of the plastic and rubber variety can be cleaned — and sanitized — in the top rack of a dishwasher provided that they’re free of electrical or battery-operated components. The same goes for baby and pet toys, although proceed. Source: www.mnn.com
