Want to Become a Makeup, Jewelry or Cookware Home Salesperson? - U.S. News & World Report

From wine to workouts, candles to cutlery, you've probably had a friend or co-worker (or perhaps been the friend or co-worker) invite you to an in-home party or post about their products on social media . Direct selling is on the rise, so that's... Over 18 million Americans were involved in direct selling and estimated retail sales reached $34. 5 billion last year (an increase of 5. 5 percent), according to the Direct Selling Association's 2015 Growth & Outlook Report. Joseph Mariano, president of the Direct Selling Association, a trade association for firms in this space, attributes this growth to several factors, including "the incorporation of social media and a new [younger] demographic being attracted to... " Makeup titan Mary Kay (known for its pink Cadillacs and well-coiffed saleswomen) is the classic example of direct selling. But nowadays, there are myriad other options, with wellness products and services leading the pack, according to the DSA report. Jennifer Friedman, a single mother in Framingham, Massachusetts, is a representative for two companies in addition to working a part-time job. She's been a Beachbody fitness coach for almost two years and recently became a LuLaRoe fashion consultant selling clothing. After trying the Beachbody workouts, she decided to become a coach (Beachbody's name for its consultants) and share them with others, mainly through social media. She loves having the flexibility to check in on her Beachbody challengers a few times a day on Facebook or arrange LuLaRoe parties at her home. "I like to keep busy," she says. But these opportunities aren't a fit for everyone. Amy Jacobs lives in Hawaii and sold jewelry through a direct sales company for about a year until she realized she didn't feel comfortable selling and sold off most of her inventory. "I kind of got suckered in, because you could sign up and get your samples that you show at parties for 50 percent off," she says. "So I signed up and spent way more money than I would have [otherwise]. " She estimates that she spent several thousand dollars on sample jewelry, not because the company required it, but because she liked the jewelry and wanted to own samples of each season's new line. All told, she says she broke even but didn't make a profit. According to Mariano, the average direct salesperson nets around $5,000 per year after expenses, but a small number of power sellers make it a full-time. Source:

Home organization: Seven ways to use your walls -

Look around at the walls. Are they serving as well as they could be. If you live in a home without space for a laundry room, a walk-in pantry or a home office, smart shelving and other wall-supported systems can make a place for those functions. In showers and closets, storage systems and even simple hooks can be attached to walls to maximize space, help save time and create order by getting things off the floor and tucked away neatly above or within arm's reach. Here are seven easy ways to use household walls for increased storage. Lighten loads: Those wire shelves that can help organize closets also can give a basement laundry area the feel of a dedicated laundry room. Options from many makers can be found at the Container Store, Home Depot, Ikea or online. These easy-to-install shelves can make many spaces easier to manage. With a variety of lengths, brackets and accessories available, it's possible to pick an area of the house and improve it for less than $100 in a weekend. Or work with a company that can install them for you. The laundry room system shown is from ClosetMaid. Streamline showering: Shower dispensers come in single, double and triple wall-mounted configurations that can be combined with shower shelves and hooks to create an orderly place for bathing and grooming tools. The system shown is from dispenser. com and includes LINEA luxury shower products. The double dispenser ($70) is paired with a shelf and shower squeegee ($70) Above, a VISO mirror ($17) for in-shower shaving. Maximize closet space: The Command line of adhesive hangers was recently expanded to include a broom gripper hook ($8), which can also be used to hang mops, dusters and other long handled cleaning tools weighing up to 4 pounds. Get the dustpan off the floor with a regular Command hook. The line features removable adhesive backing designed for easy release without harming walls and other surfaces to which the products are attached. Learn more at Command. Available through various retailers. Don't pine for a pantry. In a small home, look for wall space in a tucked-away corner, and you can make room for those staple items with shelves. ClosetMaid offers a variety of configurations, including storage drawers. Make your own corner office: Think beyond bookcases, which can be limiting in their need. Source:

Avon lady 2.0: Why your Facebook friends keep selling you jewelry - Christian Science Monitor

“Welcome to my first official ONLINE Jamberry Nails Party. ” the message read. My friend Sarah had joined up with Jamberry (think Avon for durable press-on manicures), and she was kicking things off with a Facebook shindig, inviting about 30 of her friends to browse Jamberry’s vast inventory of nail decals and adorn their... In return, she gets a discount on products she buys for herself and, if she sells enough, a small commission. To keep us engaged, there were games, occasional freebies, and “points” toward a grand prize. At one point, Sarah had partygoers offer up trivia about themselves, like a favorite hobby or a dream vacation, then recommended a set of nail wraps to match. Taking a page from Tupperware and Mary Kay and freshening it for a Facebook age, an army of direct sellers now caters to practically every want and whim – you might be friends or acquaintances with a few of them. Foodies can sell their friends on Tastefully Simple’s Pomegranate Chipotle sauce, or cookware from The Pampered Chef. Aromatherapy nuts can sign up with Scentsy. Skincare startup Willa recruits girls as young as 13 (dubbed “Willagirls”) to sell teen-targeted beauty products to their friends. Companies like these accounted for $34. 5 billion in retail sales in 2014 – a 5. 5 percent increase from the year before, according to the Direct Sellers’ Association (DSA), an industry trade group. Jamberry says consultants like Sarah pull in a combined $10 million annually. Seventy-five percent of direct sellers are women, and their involvement stems from a desire for more flexible income streams, creative fulfillment, and blurring boundaries between work and leisure. At the same time, social media has made it easy to display their wares to hundreds of potential clients with the click of a button – to the delight of some in their social circles and the exasperation of others. Work from home. This bumper crop of new direct sales companies comes as many Americans are being squeezed anew by work and family pressures. The rise in childcare costs may be one reason. After climbing steadily for decades, women's participation in the workforce has ticked down six years in a row, to about 57 percent in 2013, according to the Labor Department. (Men have a 70 percent participation rate). Twenty-nine percent of mothers with children younger than. Source:
